14 Love Songs for Valentine’s Day

14 Feb

Today is Valentine’s Day!

If you’re celebrating, I have some music selections for you in the following list. All are available to borrow from the library or through interlibrary loan.

Alternatively, if you’re not feeling lovey-dovey, click here for the anti-love songs list from last week.

1. The Everly Brothers, “All I Have to Do Is Dream”.

Any song that encourages day-dreaming is good with me.

2. The Velvet Underground, “I’m Sticking with You

A quirky yet sweet duet between Lou Reed and Maureen Tucker.

3. “It Only Takes a Moment” from Hello, Dolly!

This classic from Hello, Dolly! found a new audience after Wall-E.

4. Paul McCartney, “Silly Love Songs

Valentine’s Day is the most appropriate time to listen to silly love songs.

5. Johnny Cash, “Rose of My Heart

Borrow Walk the Line to see more about Johnny and June’s epic, enduring relationship.

6. A-Ha, “Take On Me

Boy digs Girl so much that he busts out the comics to be with her. Awww.

7. Mazzy Star, “Fade Into You

Hope Sandoval’s ethereal vocals make this song special.

8. Aaliyah, “One In a Million

Who doesn’t want to be told that they’re “one in a million”?

9. Best Coast, “When I’m With You

An easy, breezy love song, and the video is set in sunny Southern California.

10. Neko Case, “This Tornado Loves You

A song about an unrequited love that is as strong and destructive as a tornado.

11. Meiko, “Stuck On You

This song was featured in a cat food commercial, and it’s too cute to keep off the list.

12. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, “Home

The banter between Alex Ebert and Jade Castrinos is so much fun to listen to.

13. Bastille, “Flaws

The singer says his and his love’s flaws make “a wonderful mess”–the best kind.

14. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, “Let Them Knock

If you’re looking for a song to play for a romantic evening, your search ends here.

Bonus Track

Rihanna, “Umbrella

I believe that Valentine’s Day celebrates all types of love. With that in mind, this is a song for everyone you care about.

What are your favorite love songs?

14 Anti-Love Songs for Valentine’s Day

7 Feb

Valentine’s Day is nearly upon us.

Whether you are all for roses and heart-shaped candies or think Cupid is Public Enemy Number One, I have some music selections for you.

Here are 14 songs about how terrible and painful love can be. All are available to borrow from the library or through interlibrary loan.

1. Jay Z, “Song Cry”

Obviously this song, which is on The Blueprint, is from the ante-B&BI (before Beyonce & Blue Ivy) era of Jay Z’s life.

2. Fleetwood Mac, “Blue Letter”

A lesser-known kiss-off track from Fleetwood Mac, whose album Rumours included several of that theme.

3. No Doubt, “Don’t Speak

Countless teen girls in the 1990s have recovered from heartbreak by listening to this song.

4. Alanis Morissette, “You Oughta Know

Some 1990s girls sobbed to “Don’t Speak”, but some raged to “You Oughta Know”.

5. Miley Cyrus, “Wrecking Ball

“Wrecking Ball”, while honest and raw lyrically, may be too down-tempo for twerking.

6. P!nk, “So What

P!nk makes the single life look pretty fun in this video.

7. Goldfrapp, “Rocket

For those who wish an ex would vanish from the planet, this one’s for you.

8. The National, “Sorrow

The lyric “Sorrow’s a girl inside my cake” succeeds in making cake depressing.

9. Abba, “Waterloo

A breakup song that gives a history lesson with a danceable beat.

10. Linda Ronstadt, “You’re No Good

A retro fabulous song by a scorned lady–the back-up singers make this track.

11. Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You”

This song was first performed and written by Dolly Parton, but Whitney Houston made it soar.

12. Better Than Ezra, “Good

Do you remember this band from the 1990s and this catchy song?

13. Fiona Apple, “Limp

Fiona Apple provided a steady stream of songs for wronged women in the late 1990s.

14. Cyndi Lauper, “Time After Time”

A simple, bittersweet song from Cyndi Lauper’s classic album, She’s So Unusual.

Bonus Track!

Wale, “The Break Up Song”

This is one of my favorite breakup songs, which exists on a Wale mixtape that the library doesn’t own. (Sorry.) As the video is similar in theme to (500) Days of Summer, an excellent anti-love movie with an equally excellent soundtrack, I can recommend those instead.

Please come back next week, on Valentine’s Day, for 14 love song recommendations.
