A Well Crafted Read for Manga Fans: Demon Slayer Volume 1

5 Jan

It’s a premise we’ve all read about before. A character comes home to find their family has been brutally murdered with no signs of the culprit and no knowledge as to why this was done to them. All they know is that someone out there took away their family and is the only one who can answer why.

This is how volume 1 of Demon Slayer by Koyoharu Gotouge introduces us to Tanjiro Kamado, who returns to find his family in this very state after selling charcoal in the village close to his home. The only survivor is his younger sister, Nezuko, who was turned into a demon as a result of the attack.

Tanjiro is determined to find a cure for Nezuko and make her human once more as well as find the demon responsible for the murder of his family.  Volume 1 takes us through him beginning the path to becoming a Demon Slayer and the trials he must face if he wishes to accomplish his goals.

Gotouge’s storytelling does it’s job. The characters pull you in quickly and the narrative keeps you wanting to turn the page and find out what happens next. For those looking to get into manga or those looking for a new manga to read, Demon Slayer is an excellent and well crafted read available from Hoboken and other BCCLS libraries in print.
